Coming up in May are two dates to choose from on which to experience a health-enhancing combination of Hatha Yoga, Vinyasa Krama, Ayurveda and Pranayama with respected teacher Leo Cuda.

The Vitality of Vinyasa Krama

Vinyasa Krama literally means synchronizing the movement with the breath in a series of steps.  The idea behind this yoga style is a step-by-step progression towards a certain goal, in this case, a complex yoga posture or asana. Generally VinyasaKrama sequences are focused on a theme, such as backbends or forward bends, and the teacher will show you how to put together the movements in the sequence until you reach the final posture. Covering a vast amount of ground, this workshop will be split into morning and afternoon sessions.

In the Morning, from 10am -2pm, the session will focus on Hatha Yoga, Vinyasa Krama and Pranayama. Exploring different sequences of Vinyasa Krama synchronizing movement and breathing in sequences of progressive asanas to develop an inherent intelligence to reach an objective. Beyond the asana, Vinyasa Krama was developed by Krishnamacharya, the founder of modern yoga, who emphasized Vinyasa as an ingenious approach to life, a way of applying the skill and consciousness of yoga to all the rhythms and sequences of life, including personal care, relationships, work and personal evolution. Just as you would break down the asanas into steps, you can approach other life goals and tasks in the same way.

This energizing, life-enhancing practice is intensified with the simultaneous practice of Pranayama – control of the breath and control of the breathing energy, one of the fundamental aims of yoga. As you may have noticed, an agitated mind is always accompanied by restless breathing. From the beauty of this simple fact comes the idea that if we control the breath properly, we can reverse this and reach a state of tranquillity of the mind too. Pranayama is a simple and efficient tool we can use to get there. And for those who want to reduce stress, find clarity and stability in life, breathing control in yoga, and every day life stressful situations, is probably the most relevant tool we have readily available.  The breath we take in and out, impacts on our life force energy, and as such, breathing techniques are an indispensable and integral part of yoga.Following this enlightening and energizing morning’s practice, the afternoon session from 3.30-7.30pm will be dedicated to an introduction to Ayurveda.

Leo Cuda will take all students present through the fundamental theories of this ancient Indian holistic health care system dating back more than 5000 years. Literally translated as the Science of Life, this workshop will explore the principles of Ayurveda and the 5 elements Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Space – which are said to determine our physical and mental make-up. Similarly, the  3 Doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) can be roughly described as the three main body types. The 3 Gunas (Sattvas, Rajas and Tamas) refer to three pyschological states and how we can keep the mind clear and active.

The upcoming workshop will explore the application of these theories in our daily life, and importantly, the selection of foods which best benefit our Ayurvedic type – according to these principles.  This can help us to re-establish the correct functioning of our body through diet and food to bring us into health and balance according to Ayurveda.
